Socialist Resistance
SR44 - April 2007
Pension Thief Brown Heads For Poll Fiasco
Economy
Chancellor’s previous offences taken into consideration
It was tax evasion that finally put Al Capone behind bars, and it seems that a relatively technical infringement ten years ago may prove a major embarrassment in Gordon Brown’s plans for a seamless transition to succeed Tony Blair.
Climate change
Two years ago Friends of the Earth began their Big Ask campaign for a Government Climate Change bill. In response, the government has now come up with a draft Bill which, although proposing statutory targets falls far short of what is needed to tackle dangerous and accelerating climate change.
Ecology
Enemies and allies of Cuba alike can probably come to agreement on one thing; Cuba is by far leading the fight against Climate Change, internationally.
France
France: no unity on left
The major parties in France are offering voters a choice between two equally unattractive options in the presidential elections.
History
200 years on … Slavery
The Bicentennial of William Wilberforce’s bill outlawing the slave trade in 1807 is leading to many reflections on the relationship between parliamentary and extra-parliamentary action, between the actions of the white ruling class driven by changing political conditions and the self-organisation of the slaves themselves.
Sri Lanka
Following his recent successful visit to Britain in February, on March 18 NSSP leader Dr Vickramabahu Karunaratna was interviewed by the Sunday Observer, Sri Lanka’s largest circulation English language newspaper.
Palestine
“Visit Palestine” the old advertising posters used to say. Today I made the short trip from Jerusalem to Ramallah, for a day’s visit. The first part of the journey is on new roads, and as the minibus speeds on you see the turn offs to settlements. The moment the driver takes the turn for Ramallah the potholes start. We are now on a narrow road, and he has to make way for minibuses going the other way.
Middle East
A lively day of open debate
On March 24, Socialist Resistance held a very successful forum on the Middle East, War, Imperialism, Ecology and Resistance attended by around eighty participants in central London. It was particularly encouraging to see a significant number of young people at the event.
Youth Camp
The 23rd youth camp of the Fourth International will take place from Saturday 21 July to Friday 27 July in Barbaste, France.
