Socialist Resistance

Socialist Resistance was launched as a Marxist periodical produced in October 2002. In July 2009 it was refounded as a section of the Fourth International, uniting ISG supporters and other individual activists from the environmental, global justice, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist and anti-war movements as well as Respect.

Editorial
George Galloway was the first MP to break with Labour to the left. He was a central leader of the biggest anti-war movement Britain has ever seen, and prepared to be expelled for his uncompromising stand.

Respect
Respect Party Platform
In the aftermath of the Respect conference last year, a number of activists approached Socialist Resistance supporters on the National Council to discuss how to work together to positively build Respect while at the same time fighting for a healthier internal life for the organisation. As a result a new current has been launched inside Respect.

Respect
In the recent debate about whether Respect MP George Galloway should have taken part in Channel 4’s reality show Celebrity Big Brother perhaps the least discussed aspect was that he was lending credibility to the perfect neoliberal TV programme - Big Brother itself.

Tube fiasco
When Labour proposed a public private partnership (PPP) part privatisation for London Underground rail unions and passengers were sceptical. But no, we were assured, Labour had learnt from the lessons of the Tory privatisation of the mainline railways. This time round PPP would be properly handled with all the benefits of private investment without the disorganisation and safety breaches. So what happened? GREG TUCKER reports.

Iraq
Is Iran the next target?
In his 31 January ‘Snowmail’, Channel 4 News presenter John Snow argued “This country is at war and it is, perforce, an extraordinarily under-reported conflict.

Afghanistan
Wearing poppies with pride?
“We do not negotiate with terrorists, we put them out of business”, was the White House response to a new Bin Laden tape offering a truce. There can’t be many people who believe that statement. Certainly not the second part. Not four and a half years after the invasion of Afghanistan.

World Social Forum
I hand out Fourth International leaflets in Spanish on Venezuela and 21st century socialism. As soon as they see the word ‘Socialismo’ people almost rip the leaflets out of my hands. I can hardly keep up. At one point all I can see is hands waiting to be filled with leaflets.
