Socialist Resistance

Socialist Resistance was launched as a Marxist periodical produced in October 2002. In July 2009 it was refounded as a section of the Fourth International, uniting ISG supporters and other individual activists from the environmental, global justice, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist and anti-war movements as well as Respect.

Socialist Resistance

SR00 - October 2002

Welcome to this pilot issue of Socialist Resistance - a new paper produced by activists in the Socialist Alliance and Global Justice movement.

Each month, our paper will support and highlight the resistance by working class people and the world’s poor and oppressed to capitalism and its disastrous consequences.

Why we’re launching a new paper
The International Socialist Group and the Socialist Solidarity Network, along with individual sponsors, are taking the initiative to launch a new paper – Socialist Resistance.

US policies in the Middle East cannot be understood simply on basis of the lack of US criticism against Israeli occupation policies nor in the context of the historical support the US administration supplies to Israel. Today they have to be seen in the framework of the ‘war on terrorism’.

20 years ago a war crime of unspeakable brutality was perpetrated against the Palestinian people. The massacre at Sabra and Shatilla still ranks amongst the worst days since the occupation began in 1948. While the slaughter, which lasted over 40 hours and resulted in around 3000 deaths was carried out by Lebanese Phalange, they were only able to act with the complicity of the Israeli Defence Force.

Giving green light to a massacre
According to statements made by Ariel Sharon on 22 September 1982 in the Knesset, the decision that the Phalangists should enter the refugee camps had been made on Wednesday, 15 September 1982 at 15.30.

The politics of armed globalisation
Many people say that the coming assault on Iraq is a ‘war for oil’. While it’s true that securing privileged access to Middle East oil is a key US objective – the US consumes 10 million barrels of the 70 million produced each day – that is only a part of the story.

Trades Union Congress - a week of mind-numbing boredom, stage-managed resolutions keeping sweet with the government, promoting partnership with the bosses. But this year someone tampered with the script.

Scottish Socialist Party
Three and a half years ago people from the Scottish Socialist Alliance, including Scottish Militant Labour, took the initiative to form the Scottish Socialist Party. To some it seemed like a wild adventure that would fall on its face. But according to ALAN McCOMBES, a central leader of the SSP and a member of its International Socialist Movement platform, the SSP has helped put socialism back into the political mainstream.
